Registration & Credit
After submitting the appropriate application materials, each
student accepted into the Undergraduate & Graduate Summer Program will be
sent an informational email which includes an electronic Program Handbook and
complete registration and enrollment instructions.
Registration is the process of enrolling in classes and paying the applicable
tuition and fees. Undergraduate & Graduate Summer Program participants are
eligible to enroll in classes once they have been formally accepted to the program,
have submitted all required reply materials, and been issued a student ID number.
Participants of the Undergraduate & Graduate Summer Program enjoy all the
privileges of regularly admitted students. The work completed may not apply
toward a credential or Stanford degree unless the student is admitted to regular
standing. If the student later applies to Stanford and is admitted, the work
completed in the Undergraduate & Graduate Summer Program may be applied
toward the requirements for a Stanford University degree or credential.
Acceptance to our Undergraduate & Graduate Summer Program does not imply admission to Stanford University as a matriculated student.
Student Enrollment
Students who are eligible to enroll in classes do so by using Stanford’s
student information system which is called Axess. Beginning April 13, 2009,
Axess allows you to search the online Time Schedule of Classes, enroll in courses,
and update your address. Once enrolled in classes, students receive a bill for
Stanford University tuition and fees. Billing and payment services are delivered
electronically through Stanford’s online billing and payment service,
Stanford ePay. Monthly bills are generated on the 20th of each month and become
due on the 15th of the following month. Students will receive information about
Axess upon admission.
Course Load
All students, degree candidates, summer visitors, graduates, or undergraduates
are limited to twenty quarter units. A normal full-time program during the Summer
Quarter is twelve units. International summer visitors who have received an
I-20 from Stanford are required to enroll in a minimum of eight units.
Credit Transfer
Summer visitors wishing to receive credit at their home institutions for work
completed at Stanford are encouraged to obtain pre-approval for their courses
and should determine with their campus officials the correct procedures for
credit transfer. The Stanford calendar is based on the quarter system. The unit
of credit is the quarter unit, generally evaluated as equivalent to two-thirds
of a semester unit.
Audit Status
Stanford does not confer credit for auditing, nor is a permanent record kept
of courses audited. Auditors are expected to be observers rather than active
participants in the courses they attend, unless the instructors request attendance
on a different basis. Auditors are not permitted in courses such as language
or laboratory science courses, art courses with studio work, athletics, or courses
with other types of individualized instruction.
Auditors do not register/enroll in classes via Axess. Transcripts are not available
for courses taken under the audit status.
